DEV3 Ballotra is a WordPress theme for political campaigns and candidates: local council runs, school board and ballot-measure campaigns, community slates and issue groups. It looks like a good campaign poster: warm paper, civic teal and sunflower highlights, giant League Spartan capitals over a readable Source Serif body, flat poster blocks with a hard sunflower shadow.

The home page opens on a poster hero. The candidate portrait bleeds in from the right behind a sunflower edge, the name stacks in giant capitals on the left, and Donate and Volunteer buttons sit under the lead. An election-day countdown runs as a chip in the header and as a strip under the hero, set from one date in the Customizer.

What is inside

  • Issues grid with expandable policy cards. Eight cards with an icon, a one-line promise and a plan that opens in place: plan points, timeline and how it is paid for. Built on native details elements, so it works with the keyboard, a screen reader and JavaScript off. Each issue has its own page with questions and answers.
  • Events with a calendar list, event pages with a venue, an accessibility note and an add-to-calendar download, plus Event JSON-LD.
  • Volunteer sign-up with skills and availability, saved as a private request and emailed to you. It has a nonce, a honeypot and a rate limit, and only accepts the listed choices.
  • Donation chips and a progress bar for a fundraising goal, using a "name your price" WooCommerce product with a server-side minimum. Donations are simulated in the demo.
  • A "Paid for by" line in the footer of every page, editable in the Customizer, plus a donation notice and a donor privacy note page.
  • Campaign team, endorsements, news, a small merchandise shop (tote, badges, cap, mug), and a contact page with a map.
  • 31 block patterns, a child theme, the DEV3 Theme Toolkit plugin and a one-click demo import.

Built for compliance, not around it

Political sites are regulated and the rules differ everywhere. The demo is a fictional, non-partisan campaign with a fictional candidate and district, and it uses no real people, parties, flags or slogans. Every amount, limit and disclosure in it is a sample: you must follow your own local election and campaign-finance law. DEV3 does not provide legal advice.

Built right

Every page opens with a Photo Hero and is editable in Elementor (the free version works) and in the block editor. Motion is light: split headings, reveals and stagger, with reduced-motion support. The theme ships no 3D, no WebGL and no canvas. The always-loaded JavaScript is about 12 KB gzipped. It passes PHP lint, WordPress coding standards with 0 errors and 0 warnings, and Theme Check with no required issues.

What you get

The theme, a child theme, the DEV3 Theme Toolkit plugin, the demo content package, documentation and 6 months of support. Demo photos are free-licence stock photos of everyday places and models, credited in the package.

How it's built

Architecture, stack, key decisions and the quality gates DEV3 Ballotra passed before release.

Our own WordPress theme for campaigns: a poster-style portrait hero, an election-day countdown, an expandable issues grid, events, a volunteer sign-up form and donation chips, with a fictional non-partisan demo and no 3D.

The problem it solves

A campaign site has to do four jobs in one visit: say who the candidate is, show what they will do, get a volunteer to sign up and let a neighbour chip in. Most campaign themes are either a slideshow of slogans or a donation form with a logo. Ballotra had to put the issues in plain view, keep the election date in front of every visitor, and stay neutral and safe to demo: no real people, parties, flags or slogans, and no claims about any real election law.

Architecture and approach

Ballotra is a classic PHP theme with theme.json, built on DEV3's shared theme core in flat mode: a build gate fails the theme if any three.js or WebGL code reaches its assets. The always-loaded JavaScript is about 12 KB gzipped.

The poster hero is the toolkit's Photo Hero re-shaped by theme CSS: the photo is clipped into a slanted half-bleed on the right with a sunflower edge behind it, the headline stacks in giant capitals, and on phones the photo becomes a band above the text. The issues grid is a list of native details elements, so every plan opens without JavaScript; a small script only adds an expand-all button. The countdown is rendered by the server from one Customizer date and ticks in the browser unless the visitor prefers reduced motion.

The volunteer form is filled in at request time through a content slot, so its nonce is never cached by a page builder. The handler checks the nonce, a honeypot and a rate limit, accepts only whitelisted choices, stores the sign-up as a private request and emails the admin. Donations reuse the toolkit's donation widget and a WooCommerce "name your price" product with a server-side minimum.

Quality gates and results

Ballotra ships with a one-click demo for a fictional, non-partisan campaign: 11 Elementor pages, 8 issues, 6 events, 4 team members, 6 endorsements, 4 news posts, 4 merchandise products, a fundraising goal and 31 block patterns.

It passes PHP lint, WordPress coding standards (0 errors, 0 warnings) and Theme Check with no required issues, and its desktop and mobile shop flows run through checkout to order received with no console errors. Amounts, limits and disclosures in the demo are samples, and the docs tell buyers to follow their own local election law.

A political campaign WordPress theme: issues, countdown and volunteers with Ballotra: DEV3 Ballotra

A campaign site has four jobs in one visit: say who the candidate is, show what they will do, get a neighbour to volunteer and let people chip in. DEV3 Ballotra is a WordPress theme built around those four moments, with a poster-style hero, a live election countdown and every page editable in Elementor.

Who Ballotra is for

  • Local and council candidates who need a clear, friendly site fast.
  • Ballot-measure and issue campaigns that need a platform, events and volunteers on one site.
  • Community slates, school-board runs and civic groups that want donations and a small merchandise shop.

Issues you can read at a glance

The issues grid shows eight cards with an icon and a one-line promise. Open a card and the plan unfolds in place: plan points, a timeline and how it is paid for. Each issue also gets its own page with questions and answers. The cards are native details elements, so they work with a keyboard, a screen reader and JavaScript switched off.

An election countdown that stays in view

Set the election date once in the Customizer. A chip in the header and a poster strip under the hero count down the days, hours, minutes and seconds. With reduced motion switched on, the numbers stay still.

Volunteers and donations

The volunteer form asks for a name, an email, when you are free and how you would like to help. It is saved as a private request and emailed to you, and it has a nonce, a honeypot and a rate limit. Donations use amount chips and a progress bar toward a fundraising goal, with the amount checked on the server.

Made to be used safely

Political sites are regulated, and the rules differ everywhere. The demo is a fictional, non-partisan campaign with no real people, parties, flags or slogans, every figure is marked as a sample, and the docs tell you to follow your own local election and campaign-finance law. The footer carries a "Paid for by" line you edit in the Customizer.

Set it up in an afternoon

  1. Install the theme and the DEV3 Theme Toolkit, then import the demo from Appearance → DEV3 Demo.
  2. Set your candidate name, election date and "Paid for by" line under Appearance → Customize → Ballotra: campaign details.
  3. Replace the demo issues, events and team, and swap the photos in the Photo Hero widget.
  4. Add your donation product, check the donation notice against your local law and publish.
