The challenge

A one-product store is really a long product page. The visitor needs to understand the product, see it from every side, compare it with what they use today and choose a colour and quantity without leaving the page. Most Shopify themes are built for catalogues, so one-product brands end up stitching a landing-page app on top, faking bundle discounts with another app and losing the theme editor along the way. We wanted a theme where the whole story is native sections the merchant can reorder, bundle savings come from the merchant's real variant prices, and the product itself appears in 3D without slowing down the first screen or ignoring visitors who prefer reduced motion.

Our solution

Solo is an Online Store 2.0 theme built from scratch on DEV3's own Shopify theme base, not a fork of Dawn. The base supplies the standard templates, the cart drawer, predictive search, filters, swatches, the motion system and a lazy 3D accent engine; Solo adds its own sections, product blocks and 3D preset on top.

Key design decisions

  • Bundles from variants, not an app. The bundle offer reads a Pack option whose values start with a quantity, prices each card from its variant and calculates the saving against buying singles, so the badge is always true.
  • One object, many jobs. The same 3D product appears in the hero, turns to each chapter of the scroll story and recolours when a colour swatch is picked in the offer, so shoppers see the colour they are buying.
  • Swatches from three sources. Shopify's native swatches first, then a theme colour map, then the value name as a CSS colour.
  • Landing page as sections. Hero, story, callouts, stacked cards, comparison, steps, offer and FAQ are all standard sections, so merchants rearrange the page in the editor rather than in code.
  • Late, optional 3D. three.js downloads only when an accent is within about 300 px of the viewport, stops rendering offscreen, and falls back to a poster without WebGL or with 3D turned off.

Results

Solo ships with the fictional Oriel One store: 4 products, 26 rendered images, a GLB model, 2 collections and 4 pages, as a product CSV with images.

  • Theme Check: 0 errors and 0 warnings in Shopify Theme Check.
  • Live store test: tested on a Shopify development store, from add to cart through the cart drawer to the Shopify checkout handoff.
  • Browser QA: an automated harness at desktop and phone sizes confirmed the 3D accent renders, reduced motion turns animation off, and the console shows 0 errors.
  • Weight: about 23 KB gzip of initial JavaScript; three.js loads only when the 3D product nears the viewport.

Setup guide

Requirements

  • A Shopify store with the Online Store sales channel
  • No app is required. Optional: the free Shopify Search & Discovery app for collection filters, a reviews app that writes the standard rating metafields.

What's in the download

Unzip the download from your DEV3 account first. Do not upload the download itself to Shopify.

  • dev3-solo-1.0.0.zip: the theme. Upload this zip as it is; do not unzip it.
  • Documentation/index.html: the full guide. Open it in a browser.
  • Demo-Content/: products.csv, seed.json, images/, models/oriel-one.glb and a README for the manual import.
  • LICENSE.txt and START-HERE.txt.

Install the theme

  1. In Shopify admin go to Online Store → Themes.
  2. Click Add theme → Upload zip file and choose dev3-solo-1.0.0.zip.
  3. When the upload finishes, click Customize to preview it in the theme editor.
  4. Click Publish when you are ready. Your current theme stays in the theme library.

Import the demo content (optional)

The demo brand Oriel One is fictional; every product, review and image is sample content rendered for this theme.

  1. Go to Products → Import and upload Demo-Content/products.csv. The CSV has no image URLs.
  2. Add each product's images from Demo-Content/images/, following the file names in the demo README.
  3. On the Oriel One product, choose Add media and upload Demo-Content/models/oriel-one.glb for the 3D/AR gallery view.
  4. Content → Files: upload the hero poster, callout, story and lifestyle images listed in the demo README. The home page already refers to these file names.
  5. Create the Oriel Accessories collection (handle oriel-accessories); the cart drawer upsell uses it. Then create the pages and menus listed in the README.

A scripted seed that does all of this in one command is available from DEV3 support on request. It runs against your own store with your own Admin API token, and it tags everything it creates so it never touches your other products.

After the import

  • Give your own product a Pack option (1 bottle, 2 bottles, 3 bottles) and price each pack, so the bundle offer can calculate savings.
  • Set the free-shipping threshold and upsell collection under Theme settings → Cart.
  • Set up payments, shipping and taxes in Shopify's own settings; checkout is Shopify's.

Updates

Download the new version from your DEV3 account and upload the new theme zip under Online Store → Themes → Add theme. It arrives as a new theme in your library: copy your settings across in the theme editor or re-apply your changes, then publish it.

How to use

Build the landing page

The home template is a scroll story. In Online Store → Themes → Customize, each part is a section you can reorder, hide or duplicate:

  • Solo hero: product, 3D object, animated headline, price, rating and up to 4 spec chips.
  • Marquee for press or benefits, which speeds up while the visitor scrolls.
  • Rich text: set Text animation → Scroll-scrubbed highlight to light a manifesto up word by word.
  • Scroll story: a sticky visual with steps. With 3D accent selected, the product turns to each step.
  • Animated stats, Solo spec callouts (each point has X and Y sliders), Stacked cards, Comparison table (type yes or no for icons), How it works, Testimonials and FAQ (with FAQ structured data).
  • Solo bundle offer (anchor #Buy) and the Solo sticky buy bar, which appears after the hero and hides at the offer and footer.

Set up bundle offers

  1. Give your product a Pack option whose values start with a quantity: 1 bottle, 2 bottles, 3 bottles.
  2. Price each pack variant.
  3. The Solo bundle offer section shows one card per pack (with the Pack 1/2/3 tagline settings), calculates the "Save X%" badge against buying singles and updates the price and button for the chosen colour.
  4. If your option has another name, change Pack option name.

Colour swatches

Swatch colours come from Shopify's native swatches first, then Theme settings → Products → Swatch colours (one Name: #hex per line), then the value name as a CSS colour. Picking a colour also recolours the 3D product on the page.

The 3D product

  • Preset: the bottle is built in. Set its colours in the hero and offer sections; Preset options accepts JSON for fine tuning.
  • Your own model: upload a .glb to Content → Files, copy its link and paste it into GLB file URL. Keep it under about 3 MB, uncompressed (Draco and Meshopt are not decoded), with PBR materials.
  • Poster: shown while the model loads, and as the fallback without WebGL or with 3D turned off.
  • Product media: upload a .glb or .usdz to the product for Shopify's 3D viewer and the "View in your space" AR button.

Product page

  • Blocks: text, title, price, rating (from the standard reviews metafields), variant picker (pills or dropdown), inventory status with a low-stock threshold, buy buttons with accelerated checkout, description, feature ticks, collapsible tabs, share and app blocks.
  • Options: media left or right, stacked or thumbnail gallery, sticky info column and sticky add-to-cart bar.
  • Alternate templates: assign product.landing or product.minimal under Products → Theme template.

Motion and theme settings

  • Theme settings → Motion: animation level (Off, Subtle or Full), reveal style (Fade, Rise, Scale or Blur), duration and stagger, split headings, magnetic buttons, tilt cards and Enable 3D accents.
  • Visitors who prefer reduced motion always get static content and a still 3D frame.
  • Colours: four schemes (Stone, Night, Mist and Cobalt); every section has a scheme picker. Cart: drawer or page, cart note, free-shipping threshold and upsell collection.
