Buying guide

Buy SaaS source code or build from scratch?

Building a business application from scratch means months of work on parts every system needs: sign-in, roles, multi-tenancy, billing, reports, an installer. Buying source code gives you those on day one, but only if the code is good enough to build on.

What to check before you buy

  • A live demo you can click through in every role
  • Installation documentation and a clear list of requirements
  • A changelog that shows the product is maintained
  • Automated tests and a typed codebase you can extend safely
  • A licence that matches how you will sell or use it

When building is the better choice

If your process is unusual, the product is your core intellectual property, or you need deep integration with systems no product supports, a custom build can be worth it. DEV3 also builds custom software; see our services.
