DEV3 Steepwell is a free WordPress and WooCommerce theme for coffee roasters, tea merchants, cafes with a retail wall and any shop that sells what it brews. It feels artisanal and warm: Rozha One headlines on warm paper, sienna and espresso brown with olive and crema accents, bag-label cards with stitched edges, perforated band edges and a chalkboard menu. Every section is led by real photography. Motion is light (split headings, reveals, a slow drift on the hero) and respects reduced motion.

Built to sell coffee and tea

  • A shop for six kinds of product: coffee beans, ground coffee, loose tea, tea bags, brewing gear and gifts, with 41 demo products from six fictional roasters and merchants.
  • Origin, roast and tasting notes as chips: global product attributes shown as a pin chip, a five-bean roast meter and note chips that link to filtered shop results. Grind is a variation attribute shown as swatches.
  • Delivery frequency (subscribe and save): one-off, every 2, 4 or 8 weeks with a saving, stored on the cart line and the order. It is a front-end option; real recurring billing needs a WooCommerce subscriptions plugin, and the page says so.
  • Find your roast quiz: a plain GET form with three questions that lists the matching products on the same page, with no JavaScript.
  • Brew guides with step cards: dose, water, temperature, time and grind on a facts strip, numbered step cards and the gear shelf.
  • Cafe menu and locations: a chalkboard menu board with dotted price leaders and dietary tags, and location cards with address, hours and features.
  • Wholesale enquiry form, plus the mini-cart drawer, wishlist page and quick view from the DEV3 Theme Toolkit.

Pages included in the demo

Home, Find your roast, Subscriptions, Brew guides, Menu, Cafes, Wholesale, About, Contact, FAQ, Journal, Wishlist and the shop pages, with 41 demo products, six brew guides, three cafes and sixteen menu items. Product pack images are drawings of fictional packs, so no real brand or packaging appears.

Built for editing

Every demo page is built in Elementor (free) with the DEV3 Theme Toolkit widgets, and 28 block patterns cover the same sections for the block editor. Colours and fonts come from one token file and sync to the Customizer, theme.json and the Elementor kit. Fonts are self-hosted. The demo photos are free-licence (CC0) stock photos listed in PHOTO-CREDITS.md; all names, products, prices and quotes are fictional.

How it's built

Architecture, stack, key decisions and the quality gates DEV3 Steepwell passed before release.

A free WooCommerce theme for coffee roasters, tea merchants and cafe retail: attribute chips, a delivery-frequency option, a no-JavaScript roast quiz, brew guides, a menu board and cafe locations, built on the DEV3 theme core.

The problem it solves

Coffee and tea shoppers choose by taste, not by size: origin, roast level and tasting notes matter more than a title and a price. Most store themes show a grid. Steepwell had to put those facts next to every product, offer a gentle subscription path without pretending to be a billing engine, teach people how to brew, show the cafes, stay fully editable in Elementor and look warm and distinct from restaurant and grocery themes, using photography and light motion only.

Architecture and approach

Steepwell is a classic PHP theme with theme.json on DEV3's flat theme core, with about 11 KB of always-loaded JavaScript gzipped.

Origin, roast and tasting notes are global WooCommerce attributes; the theme draws a five-bean roast meter from the roast term and note chips that link to ?filter_notes= results. Grind is a variation attribute shown as swatches by the Toolkit. The delivery frequency is a radio group saved on the cart line and order item, with the discount applied in before_calculate_totals. The roast quiz is a GET form whose answers map to attribute terms and list products server-side. The Toolkit's team type became Cafes and menu_item prints a chalkboard board. Content markers such as {steepwell:quiz} place the dynamic sections anywhere.

Quality gates and results

Steepwell ships as a free download with a one-click demo: 18 pages, 41 products, six brew guides, three cafes, sixteen menu items and five customer stories. Gates: php -l 0, phpcs 0 errors and 0 warnings, Theme Check 0 required, Woo checkout flow and Elementor editor pass.

A free coffee and tea shop WordPress theme with a roast quiz: DEV3 Steepwell

Coffee and tea are bought by taste. Shoppers want to know where a bean grew, how dark it is roasted, what it tastes of and how to brew it before they look at the price. DEV3 Steepwell is a free WordPress theme built to put those answers on every product card, with real photography instead of effects and every page editable in Elementor.

Who Steepwell is for

  • Coffee roasters and tea merchants that sell online and ship.
  • Cafes with a retail wall that want a shop, a menu and their locations on one site.
  • Independent shops that stock several roasters and want to name each one.

Taste first, on every card

Origin, roast and tasting notes are ordinary WooCommerce attributes. The theme shows them as a pin chip, a five-bean roast meter and note chips; each chip links to the shop filtered by that note. Grind is a variation attribute shown as swatches.

A roast quiz that needs no JavaScript

Three radio questions in a plain form. Submit it and the same page lists the products that match, falling back to the closest matches when nothing fits every answer.

Subscribe and save, honestly

Every coffee and tea can offer a delivery frequency: one-off, every 2, 4 or 8 weeks with a saving. The choice is stored on the cart line and the order. It is a front-end option, and the page says plainly that real recurring billing needs a WooCommerce subscriptions plugin.

Teach people how to brew

Each brew guide is a post with a facts strip (dose, water, temperature, time, grind), numbered step cards and a shelf of the gear it uses. Product pages list the guides that use them.
