DEV3 Linguana is a free WordPress theme for language schools, tutoring centres, private tutors and online language academies. It is lively and conversational: Fredoka headlines, warm cream surfaces, coral, teal and sunny-yellow accents, speech-bubble shapes and real photography of people talking. Motion is light and purposeful (split headings, reveals, stacked cards, a rotated marquee of greetings, a slow Ken Burns drift on the hero) and it respects reduced motion. There is no 3D or WebGL in the theme at all.

Languages, levels and formats

  • A Languages post type with a greeting, the name in the language itself, formats, rating, price and a level pathway: one line per CEFR level from A1 to C2 with a name, duration and a plain can-do sentence.
  • Language cards show filled level badges; the archive filters by search, level and format.
  • Five course formats (group, 1-to-1, online, intensive and kids) on their own page with a comparison table.

Tutors

  • A Tutors post type with native language, the languages they teach, hourly rate, formats, availability, specialities, training and a teaching philosophy.
  • Each language page lists its tutors automatically, and each tutor page links back to the languages they teach, with a trial-lesson button.

Placement test, timetable and trial lessons

  • A free placement test: eighteen generic sample questions from A1 to C2, one at a time with a progress bar, scored in the browser. Nothing is stored or sent. The result links to the trial-lesson page with the level pre-filled.
  • A class timetable with a week grid, language filters and today highlighted.
  • A trial lesson booking form: language, preferred date and time and contact details, stored as private requests and emailed to you.

Exam preparation and a culture blog

  • A generic international exams page for levels A2 to C2 with a stacked four-step plan. No exam brands or logos.
  • A culture and tips blog with category, reading time and a phrase-of-the-day box style.

Shop

WooCommerce styling for course packages, lesson bundles (variable packs, passes and term tickets) and downloadable e-book PDFs, with a slide-out mini cart.

Built for editing

Every demo page is built in Elementor (free) with the DEV3 Theme Toolkit widgets, and 26 block patterns cover the same sections for the block editor. Colours and fonts come from one token file and sync to the Customizer, theme.json and the Elementor kit. Fonts are self-hosted. The demo photos are free-licence (CC0) stock photos listed in PHOTO-CREDITS.md; all names, tutors and figures are fictional. No flags are used as logos.

How it's built

Architecture, stack, key decisions and the quality gates DEV3 Linguana passed before release.

Our own free WordPress theme for language schools and tutors: languages with A1 to C2 pathways, five course formats, tutor profiles, a placement test scored in the browser, a class timetable and trial-lesson booking, on the no-3D theme core.

The problem it solves

A language school sells a feeling as much as a service: that you will actually speak. Visitors want to know which language and level suit them, which format fits their week, who will teach them and how to try a lesson. Most school themes answer with a generic course grid. Linguana had to make levels clear, show real tutors and their native languages, let people test their level without an account, keep every page lively with photography rather than effects, and stay fully editable in Elementor.

Architecture and approach

Linguana is a classic PHP theme with theme.json, built on DEV3's shared theme core in flat mode: a "flat": true token stamps a WebGL-free boot (smooth scroll, header, motion) and a build gate fails the theme if any three.js or WebGL code reaches its assets. The always-loaded JavaScript is about 13 KB gzipped.

The DEV3 Theme Toolkit provides the post types (languages, tutors, learner stories) and the widgets. A language stores its A1 to C2 pathway as plain lines, and the templates turn them into a stepped ladder and filled level badges. A small lazy script, loaded only where it is needed, powers the archive filters and the placement test, which scores eighteen sample questions in the browser and links to the trial-lesson form with the level attached.

Booking uses the toolkit's appointment request form with the languages as topics; submissions are stored as private requests and emailed. The demo uses free-licence CC0 photos with a credits file.

Quality gates and results

Linguana ships as a free download with a one-click demo: 11 Elementor pages, 10 languages, 11 tutors, 6 learner stories, 6 blog posts, 17 shop products and 26 block patterns.

It passes PHP lint, WordPress coding standards (0 errors, 0 warnings), Theme Check with no required issues, the WooCommerce checkout flow and an Elementor editor test, and its no-3D gate.

A free language school WordPress theme with a placement test and CEFR levels: Linguana: DEV3 Linguana

A language school's website has one job: help a curious visitor picture themselves speaking, and take the first step. That means clear levels, real tutors, a timetable that makes sense and a way to try a lesson without commitment. DEV3 Linguana is a free WordPress theme built for exactly that, with real photography of people talking and every page editable in Elementor.

Who Linguana is for

  • Language schools and academies teaching several languages in groups, one to one and online.
  • Private tutors and tutoring centres who want tutor profiles, a timetable and trial-lesson booking.
  • Agencies and freelancers building a school site the owner can keep up to date.

Levels that people understand

Each language stores a level pathway: one line per CEFR level from A1 to C2 with a name, a duration and a plain sentence about what you can do. The template turns those lines into a stepped ladder, and language cards show filled level badges so visitors see at a glance which levels you offer.

Tutors with a voice

The Tutors post type stores the native language, the languages taught, an hourly rate, formats, availability, specialities and a teaching philosophy. Language pages list their tutors automatically, and each tutor page has a button to book a trial lesson.

A placement test that runs in the browser

The theme includes a short placement test: eighteen generic sample questions from A1 to C2, shown one at a time with a progress bar. It is scored in the visitor's browser, so nothing is stored or sent, and the result links to the trial-lesson form with the level attached. Edit the questions in a plain HTML widget: each one is a list item with its level and the letter of the right answer.

Timetable and trial lessons

A class timetable shows the week at a glance with language filters and today highlighted. The trial lesson page uses the toolkit's appointment form: the learner picks a language, a day and a time, and the request is stored as a private request and emailed to you.

The class timetable: a week grid of live and in-school classes filtered by language

Trial lesson booking: three steps beside a request form with language, date and time

Shop and exam preparation

WooCommerce is styled for course packages, lesson bundles (variable packs, passes and term tickets) and downloadable e-book PDFs, with a slide-out mini cart. A generic exam preparation page explains preparation for international exams from A2 to C2 with no exam brands or logos.

Free, light and editable

Linguana is free to download. It has no 3D or WebGL, self-hosts its fonts, loads about 13 KB of shared script and passes WordPress coding standards, Theme Check and a full WooCommerce checkout test. Colours and fonts come from one token file and sync to the Customizer, theme.json and Elementor. All demo names, tutors and figures are fictional, and the photos are free-licence stock.
