DEV3 Apothena is a free WordPress theme for independent pharmacies, health and wellness stores and small pharmacy groups. It is bright and reassuring: Libre Franklin headlines, soft mint surfaces, deep green bands with coral highlights, and real photography in every section. Motion is light (split headings, reveals, counters) and it respects reduced motion.

Sign in to download it for free. There is no public live demo: watch the video tour at the top of this page, or step through the screenshots at desktop, tablet and phone sizes.

Apothena is a design and a set of tools. It gives general information only, is not a medical device and offers no medical advice. Review all wording against your local pharmacy rules before you publish. The demo brands, people, stores and prices are fictional.

A store-first shop

  • Category tiles, bestsellers, a slide-out mini cart, quick view and a wishlist.
  • A pharmacy notes box on every product: sale status (general, pharmacist advice recommended, or prescription only), pack size, who it is suitable for, directions, ingredients and warnings, shown in a Directions & info tab.
  • Prescription-only products cannot be added to the cart: they show a Send your prescription button instead.
  • A free-delivery nudge in the cart, delivery and returns pages, and a consult-a-pharmacist-or-doctor note on product pages.

Prescription and refill requests

  • A prescription upload request with safe file checks: up to 3 files of 6 MB, JPG, PNG, WebP or PDF checked by content, images re-encoded to drop EXIF, PDFs with scripts rejected.
  • Files are stored in a private folder, can be downloaded only by logged-in staff, and are deleted after 30 days (adjustable).
  • Sending is a request, not an order: a pharmacist reviews every request. A separate refill and medicine reminder request form works the same way.
  • Requests land in the admin and are emailed to you. Real prescription handling needs your own compliance review and secure hosting.

Services, pharmacists and stores

  • Health services (vaccinations, health checks, consultations) with price, length, who it is for, how to prepare, steps and FAQs.
  • Pharmacist profiles with titles, languages, special interests, training and a weekly timetable that feeds a "who is in" grid.
  • A store locator with search, open now and nearest first, from a simple one-line-per-store setting.
  • A health tips blog and customer reviews.

A photo hero that welcomes people

The toolkit's Photo Hero widget gives you one photo, a cross-fading slideshow or a muted background video, with an overlay, a split headline, two buttons and trust chips.

Built for editing

Every demo page is built in Elementor (free) with the DEV3 Theme Toolkit widgets, and 27 block patterns cover the same sections for the block editor. Colours and fonts come from one token file and sync to the Customizer, theme.json and the Elementor kit. Fonts are self-hosted. The demo photos are free-licence (CC0) stock photos listed in PHOTO-CREDITS.md.

How it's built

Architecture, stack, key decisions and the quality gates DEV3 Apothena passed before release.

Our own free WordPress theme for pharmacies and health stores: a store-first shop, a prescription upload request with safe file checks, refill reminders, health services, pharmacist profiles and a store locator, built on DEV3's flat theme core.

The problem it solves

A pharmacy website has to do two jobs that pull in different directions: sell everyday health products like a good shop, and handle sensitive requests with care. Shoppers want clear delivery and returns, and to know which products need a pharmacist. Patients want to send a prescription without confusion over whether it is an order. Owners need to stay careful about what the site claims. Apothena had to feel warm and clear, keep every request in front of a pharmacist, treat uploaded files as sensitive, and stay fully editable in Elementor.

Architecture and approach

Apothena is a classic PHP theme with theme.json, built on DEV3's shared theme core in flat mode, with light always-loaded JavaScript.

The shop adds a pharmacy notes box to every product: sale status, pack size, suitability, directions, ingredients and warnings. Prescription-only products replace the buy button with a Send your prescription button, and product pages carry a consult-a-pharmacist-or-doctor note. The cart nudges towards free delivery.

The prescription upload request accepts up to three files of 6 MB. Types are checked by content, images are re-encoded to drop EXIF, PDFs with scripts are rejected, and files sit in a private folder that only logged-in staff can download from and that is cleared after 30 days. The form says clearly that sending is a request, not an order, and that a pharmacist reviews it. A refill and reminder form works the same way.

The DEV3 Theme Toolkit provides health services, pharmacists and customer reviews, and a store locator reads a one-line-per-store setting to offer search, open now and nearest first. The Photo Hero widget opens every page. The demo uses free-licence CC0 photos and fictional brands.

Quality gates and results

Apothena ships as a free download with a one-click demo: Elementor pages, health services, pharmacist profiles, customer reviews, health tips, shop products and 27 block patterns.

It passes PHP lint, WordPress coding standards, Theme Check, the WooCommerce checkout flow, and an Elementor editor test. The theme gives general information only and is not a medical device; owners should review all wording and any prescription handling against their local rules.

A free pharmacy WordPress theme with prescription requests and a store locator

A free pharmacy WordPress theme with prescription requests and a store locator: DEV3 Apothena

A pharmacy website has two jobs: be a clear, friendly shop for everyday health products, and make it easy to ask a pharmacist for help without confusion. DEV3 Apothena is a free WordPress theme built for both, with real photography instead of effects and every page editable in Elementor.

Apothena gives general information only. It is not a medical device and offers no medical advice. Review all wording, and any prescription handling, against your local pharmacy rules before you publish. The demo brands, people and stores are fictional.

Who Apothena is for

  • Independent pharmacies and small pharmacy groups that want a shop and a request service in one site.
  • Health, wellness and baby-care stores that sell products where a little guidance helps.
  • Agencies and freelancers building a health retail site the owner can keep up to date.

A prescription request done carefully

The prescription page offers an upload request. Visitors add up to three files (JPG, PNG, WebP or PDF, 6 MB each) and choose a store. The form says plainly that sending is a request, not an order, and that a pharmacist reviews it and gets in touch before anything is prepared.

File checks run on the server: types are checked by content, images are re-encoded to drop EXIF data, and PDFs that contain scripts are rejected. Files go to a private folder, can be downloaded only by logged-in staff, and are deleted after 30 days by default. A separate refill and medicine reminder form works the same way. Real prescription handling needs your own compliance review and secure hosting.

A shop that knows what needs a pharmacist

Each product has a pharmacy notes box: sale status (general, pharmacist advice recommended, or prescription only), pack size, suitability, directions, ingredients and warnings. Prescription-only products cannot be bought online; they show a Send your prescription button. Product pages carry a consult-a-pharmacist-or-doctor note, and the cart shows how far you are from free delivery.

Services, pharmacists and stores

Health services (vaccinations, health checks, consultations) show price, length, who they are for and how to prepare. Pharmacist profiles list languages, interests and a weekly timetable. The store locator searches by name or address, filters by open now and sorts nearest first, from one line per store in the Customizer.
