DEV3 Pawcrest is a free WordPress theme for veterinary clinics, animal hospitals, groomers, boarding kennels and pet care businesses. It is warm and playful rather than clinical: Quicksand headlines, a cream canvas with cocoa ink, a tangerine accent, sunny-yellow stickers, scalloped section edges, paw-print bullets and real photography of pets in every section. Motion is light (split headings, reveals, counters, a slow Ken Burns drift on the hero) and it respects reduced motion.

A hero that puts the appointment first

  • The toolkit's Photo Hero widget: one photo, a cross-fading slideshow or a muted background video, with an overlay, optional Ken Burns drift, a split headline, two buttons and chips.
  • A floating appointment bar sits under the hero: service, day and time of day, then your pet's name, species and reason for the visit, then your details.
  • A slim emergency banner above the header shows your emergency number and today's opening hours, next to click-to-call.

Services, vets and timetables

  • Services (check-ups, vaccinations, surgery, dental care, grooming, boarding, emergency, puppy and kitten care, senior care) with a guide price, visit length, a calm-care note, a step-by-step "what happens" list and FAQs.
  • Vets with a directory you can filter by name, service or pet type (dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, small pets, exotics), an accepting new pets badge, profiles with training, special interests and timetable, and a who is in week grid built from each vet's hours.
  • A live opening hours card with today highlighted and an Open now pill, driven from the Customizer.

Wellness plans, new clients and tips

  • Wellness plans for puppies and kittens, adult pets and seniors, sold as variable WooCommerce products by pet size, with a monthly estimate calculator and a pet insurance list.
  • A new clients page with a first-visit timeline, downloadable PDF forms and a checklist, plus an emergency page with a click-to-call card.
  • A pet care tips blog with category filters.

Pet shop

Small WooCommerce shop for food and treats, toys and accessories (all fictional brands in the demo), with a slide-out mini cart.

Built for editing

Every demo page is built in Elementor (free) with the DEV3 Theme Toolkit widgets, and 24 block patterns cover the same sections for the block editor. Colours and fonts come from one token file and sync to the Customizer, theme.json and the Elementor kit. Fonts are self-hosted. The demo photos are free-licence stock photos listed in PHOTO-CREDITS.md; the clinic, vets, reviews, insurers, brands, prices and figures are fictional.

How it's built

Architecture, stack, key decisions and the quality gates DEV3 Pawcrest passed before release.

Our own free WordPress theme for vets and pet care: a photo hero with an appointment bar that asks for pet name, species and reason, an emergency banner with opening hours, vets with a pet-type filter and wellness plans.

The problem it solves

Pet owners choose a vet on trust and worry: they want to see a friendly face, know the price, tell the clinic what kind of pet they have and know what to do when something is wrong at 7am. Most vet themes look like clinics or hospitals. Pawcrest had to feel warm and playful, make booking and the emergency line obvious on every page, show which vet sees which pets, and stay fully editable in Elementor, with photography and light motion only.

Architecture and approach

Pawcrest is a classic PHP theme with theme.json, built on DEV3's shared theme core in flat mode: a WebGL-free boot (smooth scroll, header, motion) and a build gate that fails the theme if any heavy graphics code reaches its assets. The always-loaded JavaScript is about 12 KB gzipped.

The DEV3 Theme Toolkit provides the post types (services, vets, client reviews) and the widgets. The Photo Hero opens every page, and the request form takes appointment requests; a small theme filter adds pet name, species and reason fields and stores them with the request. A slim emergency banner shows today's opening hours, and the vets directory filters by pet type.

The look is deliberately not clinical: a cream canvas, cocoa ink, tangerine and sunny yellow, chunky sticker buttons, scalloped section edges and paw-print bullets.

Quality gates and results

Pawcrest ships as a free download with a one-click demo: 6 Elementor pages, 9 services, 5 vets, 8 sample client reviews, 6 articles, 11 shop products (3 wellness plans) and 24 block patterns.

It passes PHP lint, WordPress coding standards (0 errors, 0 warnings), Theme Check with no required issues, the WooCommerce checkout flow and an Elementor editor test.
