Drag the background to pan, Ctrl or Cmd with the wheel (or the buttons) to zoom. Drag a card onto another to make them report to that person. Use the circle under a card to collapse a team.

Only valid managers are listed, so a loop is impossible.

Download the chart

Collapsed teams stay collapsed in the download, so expand everything first for a full chart.

How to use the org chart maker

An org chart you can build in minutes

An org chart shows who reports to whom. It helps new hires find their way, supports planning and reviews, and makes gaps in a team easy to see. This tool draws the chart for you, so you only enter the people and the lines between them.

Build it

  1. Start from the sample or choose New chart. The sample is a made-up outdoor equipment company so you can see how a finished chart looks.
  2. Select a card to edit the name, job title, department and colour. Add a photo, or leave it and the card shows initials.
  3. Add people with Add report (a direct report of the selected person) or Add peer (someone at the same level).
  4. Re-organise by dragging. Drop a card onto the new manager. The whole team moves with them, and the tool refuses moves that would create a loop.
  5. Collapse a team with the circle under its manager to hide the detail, and expand it again when you need it.

Choose a layout

Top down is the classic pyramid and suits small and medium companies. Left to right uses less height and reads well for deep hierarchies, or when you want to paste the chart into a landscape slide. Switching layout never changes your data.

Import from a spreadsheet

If your people list already exists in a sheet or HR export, save it as CSV with the columns name, title and manager. Managers are matched by name, ignoring capital letters. After importing you get a list of anything that needed fixing, such as a manager who is not in the list or two people who manage each other.

Share the result

Download a PNG for documents, a PDF for printing and an SVG to edit in a design tool. Export JSON saves the full chart, including photos, and Export CSV gives you a list you can use elsewhere.

Tips for a readable chart

  • Keep job titles short so they fit the card.
  • Use one colour per department rather than one per person.
  • Collapse large teams for a leadership view, then export a second chart for each department.
  • For companies with several hundred people, a live chart connected to your HR system will stay current without manual edits, and DEV3 can build one.

Frequently asked questions

Where is my chart stored?

Only in your browser on this device. Names, titles and photos are never uploaded. Clearing your browser data removes the chart, so use Export JSON for a backup you can import later.

How do I import people from a spreadsheet?

Save the sheet as CSV with a header row containing name, title and manager. The manager column holds the boss's name exactly as it appears in the name column; leave it empty for the top person. A department column is optional and colours the boxes. Problems such as unknown managers or loops are listed after the import.

How do I change who reports to whom?

Drag a card onto the person they should report to. The card turns green when the move is allowed and red when it is not. You can also pick a manager from the Move to report to list, which works well on a phone.

Why can I not drop someone onto some cards?

A person cannot report to themselves or to anyone in their own team, because that would create a loop with no top. Those targets are refused automatically.

Can a large chart fit on one page?

Yes. The PNG and PDF exports include the whole chart scaled to fit one page. Choose A3 for charts with many people, or use the SVG, which stays sharp at any size. Collapse teams first if you want a summary view.

What are the limits?

Up to 500 people per chart. Photos are shrunk to a small size so the saved chart stays light. Text is shortened on the cards, and the full text appears when you hover over a box.
