How to use the barcode generator
Barcodes for products, stock and labels
A barcode is a machine-readable way to carry a short number or text. This generator produces the six formats shops and warehouses use most, checks your input and gives you print-ready files.
Choose the right format
- EAN-13 is the standard retail code outside North America. It has 13 digits including a check digit.
- UPC-A is the North American retail code with 12 digits.
- EAN-8 is a short code for small packages.
- Code 128 encodes any ASCII text compactly and is the common choice for internal IDs, order numbers and shipping labels.
- Code 39 encodes capital letters, digits and a few symbols, and is found in older systems and ID cards.
- ITF (Interleaved 2 of 5) encodes an even number of digits and is used on cartons.
Check digits
For EAN and UPC, enter the code without the last digit and the tool calculates it. If you enter the full code, it checks that the final digit is right and tells you what it should be if not. ITF values with an odd number of digits get a leading zero.
Single and batch
Type one value to see a live preview with SVG, PNG and copy options. In batch mode, paste a list with one value per line. Invalid lines are shown with a reason rather than stopping the batch, and you can download everything as a single SVG or PNG sheet.
Printing tips
- Use dark bars on a white or very light background.
- Leave blank margins at both ends; the margin slider controls this quiet zone.
- Test with a real scanner or a phone before printing a large run.
- Prefer SVG for print because it scales without blur; use PNG for documents and screens.

Frequently asked questions
What is a check digit?
The last digit of EAN and UPC codes, calculated from the others so scanners can catch misreads. Enter one digit fewer and the tool adds it, or enter the full code and it verifies it.
Can I use these on products I sell?
The barcode image is valid, but retail EAN and UPC numbers must be licensed from GS1 so your numbers are unique worldwide. Use a made-up number for testing and internal labels.
Which type should I choose?
EAN-13 and UPC-A for retail goods, EAN-8 for small packs, Code 128 for internal IDs and shipping, Code 39 for simple uppercase labels and ITF for cartons and logistics.
What size should I print?
Keep a quiet zone of at least ten bar widths on each side and avoid scaling below about 80 percent of the nominal size for retail codes. Print on a light background with dark bars.
How does batch mode work?
Switch it on and enter one value per line, up to 200. Each line becomes a code, and you can download them singly or as one sheet in SVG or PNG.
Is my data uploaded?
No. Barcodes are drawn in your browser.
