How to use the gantt chart and timeline maker
A Gantt chart you can use in a minute
A Gantt chart lays your tasks out against a calendar so you can see what happens when, what depends on what, and where the plan is tight. This tool runs entirely in your browser: open it, edit the sample plan or start your own, and everything saves on your device automatically.
Building a plan
- Add tasks with a start date and a duration in days, or set a start and end date. Click a bar or its name to open the editor below the chart.
- Add milestones for moments with no duration, such as sign-off or launch. They appear as diamonds.
- Group tasks under headings such as Plan, Design and Build. Each group gets a colour and a summary bar that spans its tasks and shows overall progress.
- Link tasks. In the editor choose a predecessor under Starts after. The arrow on the chart shows the link, and the later task will never start before the earlier one has finished.
- Track progress with the percentage field. The filled part of each bar shows how much is done.
Moving things around
Drag a bar to move it. Drag either end to change the start or the length. Everything snaps to whole days. When a bar moves, any task that depends on it is pushed later so the plan stays valid. On a keyboard, focus a bar and press the left or right arrow to move it a day, or hold Shift to change its length.
Use the Day, Week and Month buttons to zoom. Day view suits a few weeks of work, week view suits a quarter and month view suits a year. The red line marks today.
Sharing the result
- PNG is a sharp image for slides and chat.
- PDF puts the chart on a landscape page for printing or attaching to an email.
- CSV opens in a spreadsheet with start, end, duration and dependencies. You can edit it there and import it back.
- JSON is a complete backup. Import it on another device to continue.
Planning tips
Keep tasks to a few days to a couple of weeks. Anything longer hides risk. Add a buffer task before fixed dates. Put milestones at hand-over points, not in the middle of work, and review the chart weekly so progress stays honest.
When you outgrow it
A browser chart is ideal for one planner. When a team needs shared plans, assignments, reminders and reports, a project workspace is the better fit, and DEV3 can build one around the way you work.
Frequently asked questions
Where is my chart stored?
Only in your browser on this device. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account. Use Export JSON to keep a backup or to move the chart to another device.
How do dependencies work?
Dependencies are finish to start: a task cannot begin before every task it depends on has finished. If you move or lengthen a predecessor, the tasks after it shift later automatically. They never move earlier on their own.
Can I drag bars on a phone?
Yes, bars respond to touch as well as mouse. For precise changes, tap a bar and edit the dates and duration in the panel below the chart, or focus a bar and use the arrow keys on a keyboard.
What can I import?
JSON files exported by this tool, and CSV files with a header row. A CSV needs name and start (YYYY-MM-DD), plus optionally end or days, group, progress, milestone and depends_on (row numbers or task names separated by semicolons).
What are the limits?
Up to 300 tasks and 30 groups per chart, and tasks up to ten years long. These keep dragging smooth and the exported image a sensible size.
Does the exported image include the today line?
Yes. PNG and PDF exports draw the chart on a white background with the current date marked in red, using the zoom level you have selected.
