DEV3 Trailforge is a free WordPress theme for sports and outdoor gear stores: hiking, camping, climbing, cycling, running and water sports. It looks like the trail, not a department store: Antonio condensed capitals over Inter, stone paper, signal orange and pine, notched corners, topographic contour lines on dark bands and a mountain ridge cut under every photo hero. Motion is light (split headings, reveals, counters, a slow Ken Burns drift) and respects reduced motion. There is no 3D or WebGL in the theme at all.

Shop by activity, find gear in three taps

  • Six activity tiles (hiking, camping, climbing, cycling, running, water sports) as product categories with photos and item counts.
  • A gear finder built as a plain GET form: choose activity, season and budget and the shop filters. It works without JavaScript, and a summary bar above the results has a clear link.
  • Product cards show brand, season dots and a Rent or demo tag.

Product pages that answer the real questions

  • Key spec boxes (weight, waterproof rating, materials) under the description.
  • A Specs tab with a spec table, a waterproof rating meter and a care and repair list.
  • A Size guide tab for footwear, clothing, packs and helmets with a cm and inch switch, plus a full size guide page.
  • Size and colour swatches, a slide-out mini cart, wishlist and quick view.

Rent, demo and go together

  • A Rent or demo request form (Contact Form 7) for tents, packs, climbing kit, bikes and boards.
  • Events and group trips as ticket-stub cards with level, group size, price and places left.
  • Adventures: trip stories with a trail-facts strip and the exact gear that came along.
  • Gear guides and trip reports in the blog.

Built for editing

Every demo page is built in Elementor (free) with the DEV3 Theme Toolkit widgets, including the Photo Hero, and 25 block patterns cover the same sections for the block editor. The demo has 40 products from fictional brands. Fonts are self-hosted. The demo photos are free-licence stock photos listed in PHOTO-CREDITS.md, with no readable brand logos; all names, brands and figures are fictional.

How it's built

Architecture, stack, key decisions and the quality gates DEV3 Trailforge passed before release.

Our own free WooCommerce theme for outdoor and sports gear stores: shop by activity, a no-JavaScript gear finder, spec tables, a size guide, rentals and group trips, built on the no-3D theme core.

The problem it solves

Outdoor shoppers buy on specs and fit: weight, waterproof rating, the right size for feet, torso or head, and whether it suits the season. Most store themes show a photo and a price. Trailforge had to put the numbers and the fit help next to the buy button, let people narrow a big catalogue by activity, season and budget without scripts, support renting and demoing before buying, and look like the outdoors rather than a generic shop, with no 3D code.

Architecture and approach

Trailforge is a classic PHP theme with theme.json, built on DEV3's shared theme core in flat mode: a build gate fails the theme if any three.js or WebGL code reaches its assets. The always-loaded JavaScript is about 12 KB gzipped.

The gear finder is a plain GET form (activity, season, budget) handled in the product query, so it works with JavaScript off and the results are shareable links. Product pages read simple meta fields for brand, season, spec lines, care and size table, and render key spec boxes, a spec table with a waterproof meter and a size guide tab with a cm and inch switch.

The DEV3 Theme Toolkit supplies the Photo Hero, adventures, events, requests, the mini cart drawer, wishlist, quick view and swatches. The demo uses free-licence photos with no readable brand logos.

Quality gates and results

Trailforge ships as a free download with a one-click demo: 13 Elementor pages, 40 products from fictional brands, 6 adventures, 8 group trips, 8 guides and trip reports and 25 block patterns.

It passes PHP lint, WordPress coding standards (0 errors, 0 warnings), Theme Check with no required issues, the WooCommerce checkout flow and an Elementor editor test, and its no-3D gate.

Outdoor shoppers buy on specs and fit: how heavy is it, how waterproof, which size, which season. A gear store website has to answer those questions next to the buy button and help people narrow a big catalogue quickly. DEV3 Trailforge is a free WordPress theme built for that, with real photography instead of effects and every page editable in Elementor.

Who Trailforge is for

  • Outdoor and sports retailers selling hiking, camping, climbing, cycling, running and water gear.
  • Rental and demo shops that let customers try tents, bikes and boards first.
  • Agencies and freelancers building a WooCommerce store the owner can keep up to date.

Find gear in three taps

The gear finder is a plain form: choose an activity, a season and a budget and the shop filters. It works without JavaScript, the results are shareable links and a bar above the grid shows what is active with a clear link.

Product pages that answer the real questions

Each product shows key spec boxes (weight, waterproof rating, materials), a Specs tab with a spec table and a waterproof meter, and a Size guide tab with a cm and inch switch for footwear, clothing, packs and helmets.

Rent, demo and go together
