How to use the pdf form filler and signer
Fill in and sign a PDF in a minute
Landlords, employers, schools and clients still send PDFs that need a few typed answers and a signature. This tool lets you do that without printing, scanning or creating an account, and it keeps the document on your device.
Step by step
- Open the PDF. Drop it on the page or choose it. If it contains real form fields they appear in the Form fields panel.
- Fill the fields. Type in text boxes, tick check boxes and choose drop-down values. For a flat PDF with no fields, use the Text tool instead and click where the answer belongs.
- Add details. The Date tool places today's date, which you can edit. The Check tool adds a tick mark for yes/no boxes.
- Sign. Choose Signature, then draw with your mouse, finger or stylus, or type your name in a script style. Click on the page to place it, then drag to move and use the blue dot to resize.
- Mark up. Use Highlight for a translucent colour bar, and Rectangle or Ellipse to circle or box something. Click and drag to draw.
- Download. The saved PDF has everything flattened into the pages.
Tips for neat results
- Zoom your browser to check small text. Pick a font size from 6 to 48 points.
- Select an item and press Delete to remove it.
- On phones, choose a tool, then tap the page; the signature box works with touch.
- Keep a copy of the original before you send the signed file.
What to know about signatures
A drawn or typed signature is a picture added to the document. It works for many everyday forms, but it is not a cryptographic signature. If the other party needs tamper evidence or an audit trail, use a dedicated e-signature service.
Limits
- Text uses Helvetica, so only Western European characters are supported.
- Pages that are rotated inside the PDF may place items differently; check the preview.
- Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first.
Privacy
Nothing leaves your browser. We do not store the file, your signature or your answers.
Frequently asked questions
Is my document uploaded?
No. The PDF is opened, edited and saved entirely inside your browser tab with pdf-lib and pdf.js. Nothing is sent to a server, and closing the tab discards the file.
Is the signature legally binding?
It is an image of your signature placed on the page, which many everyday agreements accept, but it is not a certificate-based digital signature and it does not prove identity or detect later changes. For contracts that need stronger proof, use a qualified e-signature service and check local rules.
Which PDFs have fillable fields?
PDFs created with AcroForm fields, such as many government and HR forms, show their text boxes, check boxes, drop-downs and radio buttons in the Form fields panel. Scanned or flat forms have none, so click on the page and place text instead.
What does flattening do?
Flattening bakes the form answers into the page so they can no longer be edited or reset. Everything you place by hand is always flattened. Switch off form flattening if the recipient needs to edit the fields afterwards.
Why do some characters show as question marks?
Text uses the standard Helvetica font built into PDF, which covers Western European letters. Characters outside that set, such as Arabic, Hindi or emoji, are replaced with a question mark. Use the signature tool to draw or type those names as a picture.
Can I edit the original text of the PDF?
No. This tool adds to a page; it does not rewrite existing text. To change original content, edit the source document and export a new PDF.
