How it is calculated
Tax = price x rate / 100. Gross = price + tax. Amounts are rounded to 2 decimals. Your invoice may round per line item, so totals can differ by a small amount.
How to use the gst and vat calculator
Get the tax right in two taps
This calculator works in both directions. Use it when you know the price before tax and need the total, or when a customer paid a tax-inclusive price and you need to find the tax inside it.
Add tax to a price
- Choose India GST or VAT / other GST.
- Select Price without tax (add tax).
- Enter the amount and the rate. For India, tap a slab button; for VAT, pick a country from the list or type any rate.
- Read the net, tax and gross boxes. Use Copy to paste the summary into an invoice or message.
Remove tax from a price
Select Price with tax (remove tax). The calculator finds the net price by dividing the total by one plus the rate, then reports the tax as the difference. For example, a tax-inclusive price of 1,180 at 18% has a net of 1,000 and tax of 180.
India: CGST, SGST and IGST
Within one state, the tax splits equally into CGST (for the Centre) and SGST (for the state). Between states, the whole amount is IGST. At 18%, that is 9% plus 9%, or 18% IGST. If the tax in paise is an odd number, the extra paisa goes to SGST so the parts always add up to the total.
Accuracy notes
- Money is calculated in whole paise or cents, so there is no floating-point drift.
- Rounding is applied once to the total. If your invoicing software rounds each line, totals may differ by a small amount.
- Rates and rules change, and special cases such as reverse charge, cess and exemptions are not modelled. Confirm the rate for your goods with official sources or your accountant.
Use the result for quotes and quick checks. For filing returns, rely on your accounting software and a qualified tax professional.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove GST from a price that already includes it?
Switch to "Price with tax (remove tax)". The calculator divides the total by 1 plus the rate, so ₹1,180 at 18% gives a net of ₹1,000 and ₹180 of GST. It is not simply 18% of the total, which is a common mistake.
When is CGST and SGST charged instead of IGST?
When the supplier and the place of supply are in the same state, the tax is split equally between Central GST and State GST. When they are in different states, or for imports and exports, the whole amount is IGST. Tick the inter-state option to see IGST.
What are the current GST rates in India?
The common slabs are 0%, 0.25%, 3%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%, and rules change. Pick the preset that applies, then check the HSN or SAC code of your item against the official GST rate schedule before invoicing.
Which VAT rate should I use?
Use the standard rate of the country where the customer is, unless a reduced or zero rate applies to your goods. The list holds the standard rate and notes the reduced ones, but rates change, so confirm with the national tax authority.
Why does my invoice total differ by a few paise?
Invoices often round tax per line item and then sum, while this tool rounds the total once. Both are valid if you are consistent, but they can differ by a small amount on invoices with many lines.
