How to use the image format converter
Convert many images at once
Drop up to 50 images on the page, choose the format you want and every file is converted straight away. Download them one by one or all together in a zip. The converter reads PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, SVG, AVIF and BMP files, as far as your browser can open them.
Which format fits which job
- PNG is lossless and keeps transparency. Choose it for logos, icons, screenshots and anything with sharp text. Photos saved as PNG are very large.
- JPG is the universal photo format. It works everywhere, but has no transparency and shows artefacts if the quality is set too low.
- WebP gives photos that are about 25 to 35 percent smaller than JPG at the same look, and supports transparency. All current browsers display it.
- AVIF is the newest and usually the smallest, but it is slow to encode and not every browser can create it.
About AVIF support
Your browser decides whether it can write AVIF. This page checks that for you. If your browser cannot, an explanation appears and the AVIF option does nothing instead of quietly producing something else. A recent desktop Chrome or Edge can do it.
Steps
- Add your images.
- Choose the output format.
- For JPG, WebP and AVIF set the quality. 80 to 90 is a good balance; below 60 you will often see blocks and blur.
- For JPG, pick a background colour for any transparent areas.
- Download.
Good to know
- Animated GIFs become still pictures showing the first frame.
- SVG files are drawn at their natural size. If they have no width and height they come out at a default size, so use the SVG tool on this site when you need a specific scale.
- File names are kept and only the extension changes.
- Everything happens locally in your browser, so private pictures stay private.
Frequently asked questions
Why can I not pick AVIF in my browser?
Browsers can display AVIF widely, but only recent Chrome and Edge can also save canvas pictures as AVIF. Firefox and Safari do not offer that yet. If AVIF is unavailable the tool tells you so rather than silently giving you another format.
What happens to transparency?
PNG, WebP and AVIF keep it. JPG cannot, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose, white by default.
Which format should I choose for my website?
WebP is the best all-round choice today. It is much smaller than JPG and PNG and works in every current browser. Use AVIF for even smaller photos where the browsers you target support it, and keep PNG for sharp graphics.
Will converting lose quality?
Converting to PNG loses nothing. JPG, WebP and AVIF are lossy, so quality depends on the slider. Converting an already compressed JPG to PNG makes it bigger without making it better.
Are the files uploaded?
No. Conversion runs in your browser and the files never leave your device.
