Background Remover
Cut the background out of a photo in your browser with an open-source model or a solid-colour key, then save a transparent PNG. No upload.
Free, no sign-up. Runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
How to use the background remover
Remove a background in three steps
Dropping a clean cutout into a banner, a product page or a profile picture is one of the most common design jobs. This tool does it without an account, a watermark or an upload.
Smart method
- Drop a photo onto the box.
- Choose Smart (model) and press Remove background.
- On first use a progress bar shows the model downloading. It is about 25 MB and is cached by your browser, so later runs are fast.
- The cutout appears on a checkerboard. Use Hold to compare to flash back to the original.
The model is MODNet, an Apache-2.0 licensed matting network, loaded through the transformers.js library. It performs best on people, and works reasonably on pets and tidy product shots.
Solid colour method
If your photo has a plain wall, studio paper or white product background, this method is quicker and often cleaner:
- Choose Solid colour.
- Click the background in the picture to choose the colour to remove.
- Move Tolerance until the background disappears but the subject stays. Higher values remove more shades.
Removal starts at the border and spreads inwards, so the same colour inside the subject, such as a white shirt, is kept.
Finish
- Edge makes the cut-out boundary sharper or softer. Soften it for hair, sharpen it for hard products.
- Put the subject on a colour background instead of transparency if you need a flat image.
- Download as PNG to keep transparency.
Tips for better cutouts
- Start from a sharp, well lit photo with the subject clearly apart from the background.
- Avoid backgrounds that match clothing or fur.
- Large photos are scaled to 3000 pixels on the longest side for speed.
If the model will not load
Check your connection and try again. If your network blocks the model host, the solid colour method still works completely offline.
Frequently asked questions
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The model runs inside your browser using WebAssembly, and the colour method is plain pixel maths. Your picture never leaves your device. The only download is the model file itself.
Why does the first run take a while?
The first time you use the smart method the browser downloads the model, roughly 25 MB, from a public model host and caches it. After that it starts quickly and works from cache.
What if the model fails to load?
You will see a message explaining that the model could not be loaded, usually because you are offline or a firewall blocks the host. Retry, or use the solid colour method, which needs no download.
Which model and licence does it use?
MODNet, an Apache-2.0 licensed portrait matting model, run with the Apache-2.0 transformers.js library. It was chosen over AGPL options so the code can be reused freely.
Which pictures work best?
The smart method is tuned for people and also copes with many products and pets. Cluttered scenes and fine hair against similar colours are the hard cases. For flat backdrops, the solid colour method is often cleaner.
