How to use the unit and time zone converter

Two converters in one place

Use the Units tab for quick measurement conversions and the Time zones tab to plan a call across regions.

Converting units

  1. Pick a category, such as length or data size.
  2. Enter a value and choose the From and To units. The result appears as you type, and the swap button reverses the pair.
  3. Scroll to the table to see the same value in every unit of that category, with a copy button on each row.

Results show up to eight significant digits, so tiny and huge numbers stay readable without long strings of zeros.

Things that trip people up

  • Decimal vs binary data. GB, TB and so on are powers of 1000, while GiB and TiB are powers of 1024. Cloud storage and hard drives are usually quoted in decimal units, memory in binary.
  • US vs UK gallons. A US gallon is about 3.785 litres, a UK gallon about 4.546. The same applies to miles per gallon.
  • Temperature. Converting a temperature difference (a rise of 10 degrees) is different from converting a temperature reading. This tool converts readings.
  • Fuel economy. Litres per 100 km and miles per gallon are inverses: lower is better in the first, higher is better in the second.

Planning a meeting across zones

  1. Choose the base time zone and the date and time. It starts at the current moment in your own zone.
  2. Search for cities or regions and add up to eight zones.
  3. Read each zone's local time, date, UTC offset and DST flag.
  4. Use the 24-hour strips. Green cells are working hours (9 to 17) in that zone, and the ringed cell is your chosen time.
  5. Check the best overlap line for hours when everyone is between 8:00 and 18:00. Copy the summary to paste into an invite or chat.

Scheduling tips

  • Always include the date, because the local date can differ by a day between far-apart zones.
  • Check recurring meetings around clock-change weeks. Regions change on different dates, so the gap between two cities can shift by an hour for a few weeks.
  • If there is no shared window, rotate the inconvenient slot between teams.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between GB and GiB?

A gigabyte (GB) is 1,000,000,000 bytes and is used by drive makers and networks. A gibibyte (GiB) is 1,073,741,824 bytes (1024 cubed) and is what many operating systems display. That is why a 500 GB drive shows as about 465 GiB.

How is temperature converted?

Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin do not share a zero point, so the tool uses offset formulas, for example F = C x 9/5 + 32 and K = C + 273.15, rather than a simple multiplier.

How does the best overlap hint work?

It checks each hour of the base zone's day and lists the hours in which every chosen zone is between 8:00 and 18:00 local time. If the list is empty, no hour suits everyone and one group will need an early or late slot.

Does it handle daylight saving time?

Yes. Offsets come from your browser's time zone database for the exact date you pick, so a New York meeting in January is UTC-05:00 and in July UTC-04:00. A DST label appears when a zone is on summer time.

What happens at a clock change?

If you pick a time that does not exist because clocks jump forward, the tool moves it to the next valid time. If a time occurs twice when clocks go back, the first occurrence is used.

Are my chosen zones saved?

Your list of zones is stored in your own browser so it is there next time. Nothing is sent to a server.
