How to use the tip and bill split calculator
Split the bill without the arguments
End-of-meal maths is awkward, especially with tax, tip and an uneven total. This calculator gives each person a clear number in seconds.
How to use it
- Enter the bill amount from the receipt.
- Choose a tip percentage with the quick buttons (0, 5, 10, 15, 18, 20 and 25%) or type your own.
- Set the number of people.
- If the receipt shows tax, enter the tax rate. Tick whether the bill amount already includes it.
- Pick your currency.
The large figure shows what each person pays. Underneath are the pre-tax bill, the tax, the tip and the final total, plus the tip per person.
Options that matter
- Tip on the pre-tax amount is the default. Untick it to tip on the tax-inclusive total.
- Round each share up makes everyone pay a whole number. The rounding is added to the tip and shown, so you know exactly what it costs.
- Exact shares appear when shares are not identical, so you can see who pays the extra cent.
Handy tips
- Compare quickly by tapping different tip buttons and watching the per-person figure.
- If one person had a much bigger order, split the shared items here and add their extras separately.
- Use Copy summary to paste the breakdown into your group chat.
- For a service charge already on the bill, set the tip to 0 or the extra amount you want to leave.
Accuracy
All money is calculated in whole cents, so there is no floating-point drift and the shares always sum to the total. Tipping customs differ widely, so treat the percentages as suggestions. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Both are common. Many people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, while others tip on the total. The tool lets you choose, and the default is pre-tax.
What if the bill already includes tax?
Tick "bill amount already includes tax" and enter the tax rate. The tool backs the tax out of the bill so the tip is not calculated on top of it by mistake.
How does rounding up work?
Each person's share is rounded up to the next whole unit, such as the next dollar. The extra is added to the tip so the restaurant gets a slightly bigger gratuity and nobody has to find change.
Why do some people pay one cent more?
A total such as 100.01 split three ways cannot be divided evenly in cents. The tool gives a few people one cent more so the shares add up exactly to the bill.
What tip is normal?
It varies by country. In the United States 15 to 20% is typical, in many European countries a few percent or rounding up is usual, and in some places service is included. Check local custom.
