How to use the random name picker wheel
Pick a name, fairly and with some drama
Teachers, hosts, streamers and managers all need a fair way to choose someone. This wheel makes the draw visible and fun while keeping the result genuinely random.
Spin the wheel
- Type or paste names into the box, one per line. A sample list is loaded so you can try it straight away.
- Press Spin. The wheel turns for a few seconds and slows to a stop under the pointer at the top.
- The winner appears below the wheel with a copy button. Recent winners are listed underneath.
Tick Ignore duplicate names if the same person might appear twice in your paste. Switch on Offer to remove the winner to get a button that deletes the winner from the list, perfect for raffles with several prizes or for taking turns.
Split into teams
Switch to Team splitter, choose how many teams you want and press Make teams. Names are shuffled and dealt in turn, so the teams are as even as possible. Press the button again for a new split and use Copy teams to paste the result into chat or a document.
Tips for fair draws
- Check the count shown next to "Names" to be sure everyone is on the list.
- If you need an audit trail, copy the winner after each spin.
- For a draw that needs witnesses, share your screen and let the group watch the wheel.
- Odd results happen: with random picks, the same name can win twice in a row when winners are not removed.
Privacy
The list is saved in your browser only, so it is there next time. It never leaves your device, and clearing site data removes it. The wheel is drawn on a flat canvas with plain 2D rotation, so it runs smoothly even on older phones.
Frequently asked questions
Is the pick really random?
Yes. The winner is chosen first with the browser's cryptographic random number generator, and the wheel animation then lands on that name. Spin speed and the number of turns cannot influence the result.
Can I stop the same person winning twice?
Turn on "offer to remove the winner" and use the Remove button after each spin. The name is deleted from your list so the next spin only includes the remaining people.
How are the teams made?
The list is shuffled with a Fisher-Yates shuffle and dealt out one by one, so team sizes differ by at most one person. Press the button again to reshuffle.
Is my list saved or uploaded?
Your list is kept only in this browser so it is still there when you return. It is never sent to a server.
How many names can the wheel hold?
Dozens work well. With very long lists the slices get thin and labels shrink, so for hundreds of entries use the team splitter or pick from the list view.
