How to use the number to words converter

Numbers in words, done properly

Writing amounts in words is a legal and practical habit on cheques, invoices, contracts and receipts, because words are harder to alter than digits. This converter produces clean wording in both major systems.

Convert a plain number

Choose Plain number, type a value and select the number system. International gives "one million two hundred thirty-four thousand", while the Indian system gives "twelve lakh thirty-four thousand". Commas and spaces in your input are ignored. A negative sign adds "minus", and decimals are read digit by digit. For whole numbers you also see the ordinal form, for example "twenty-first".

Write a cheque amount

Switch to Currency (cheque) and pick the currency. Rupee amounts default to the Indian system and the others to international, and you can override this. The result names the major and minor units correctly: rupees and paise, dollars and cents, pounds and pence, and so on. Singular forms are used for exactly one unit.

Style options

  • Letter case: Title Case is traditional on cheques, but sentence, lower and upper case are available.
  • Cheque style places the currency name first and ends with "only". Turn it off for a sentence such as "one thousand dollars and fifty cents".
  • British "and" inserts "and" after hundreds in the international system.

Cheque-writing tips

  • Start writing at the far left and draw a line through any space left over.
  • The words and digits must match. If they differ, many banks treat the words as the amount.
  • Do not abbreviate and do not leave gaps between words.
  • Check the paise or cents part carefully; rounding applies after two decimals.

Everything runs in your browser, so the amounts you type are never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the international and Indian systems?

The international system groups digits in threes: thousand, million, billion. The Indian system groups the last three, then twos: thousand, lakh (1,00,000) and crore (1,00,00,000). 12,34,56,789 is twelve crore thirty-four lakh fifty-six thousand seven hundred eighty-nine.

How do I write an amount in words for a cheque?

Choose Currency, pick the currency and keep cheque style on. For 1,23,450.50 rupees you get "Rupees One Lakh Twenty-Three Thousand Four Hundred Fifty And Fifty Paise Only". Draw a line through any blank space after it.

How large a number can it convert?

Up to 21 digits, which is hundreds of quintillions in the international system. The tool uses exact integer arithmetic, so large numbers do not lose digits.

How are decimals handled?

In plain number mode digits after the point are read one by one ("point zero five"). In currency mode the decimals become the minor unit, such as paise or cents, rounded to two places.

Should I use "and" in British English?

British usage often adds "and" after hundreds, as in "one hundred and one". Tick the British option for that. American style leaves it out.
