Sources: the Income Tax Department's tax-rate page for individuals (incometax.gov.in) for the slabs, rebate, surcharge and cess, and the Finance Bill 2026 memorandum (indiabudget.gov.in), which proposes no change in tax rates, surcharge or cess for FY 2026-27. The Income-tax Act, 2025 takes over from 1 April 2026 with the same rates. Rules last checked: 6 November 2026.
How to use it
- Enter your yearly salary and other income.
- Fill in deductions you would claim in the old regime: 80C, 80D, HRA exemption, home loan interest and NPS.
- Add any employer NPS contribution, which counts in both regimes.
- Read the verdict and compare the two columns line by line.
Reading the result
Each column shows taxable income, slab tax, rebate, surcharge, cess, the monthly tax and your effective rate. As a rule, the old regime wins when your deductions are large, usually more than about 3.75 to 4.5 lakh including HRA and home loan interest.
Always verify with the latest notifications before filing. This is not tax advice.
Frequently asked questions
Which financial year does this calculator use?
Financial year 2026-27, assessed in assessment year 2027-28. The slabs were checked against the Income Tax Department tax-rate page and Budget 2026 coverage, which kept the slabs unchanged. The rules were last checked on 6 November 2026.
Is income up to 12 lakh really tax free?
In the new regime, a rebate under section 87A of up to 60,000 makes tax nil for taxable income up to 12 lakh. A salaried person with a 75,000 standard deduction therefore pays no tax up to 12.75 lakh of salary. Marginal relief applies just above the limit.
Which deductions work in the new regime?
Only the standard deduction and the employer NPS contribution (80CCD(2)) are allowed. 80C, 80D, HRA and home loan interest on a self-occupied property apply only in the old regime.
How are surcharge and cess applied?
Surcharge applies above 50 lakh of income at 10, 15, 25 and, in the old regime, 37 percent, with marginal relief at each step. The new regime caps it at 25 percent. A 4 percent health and education cess is then added on tax plus surcharge.
Is this the final tax I will pay?
It is an estimate for a resident individual below 60. It does not cover special capital gains rates, senior citizen slabs, advance tax interest or TDS adjustments. Confirm with a chartered accountant.
