How to use the habit and goal tracker

Build habits you can see

A habit tracker works because you can see the chain growing. This one keeps things deliberately simple: pick a few habits, tick them each day, and watch the streaks and the heatmap fill in. It opens with sample habits so you can see how everything looks, then you replace them with your own.

How to use it

  1. Add a habit. Give it a name and choose Daily for something you want to do every day, or Weekly target for something like three runs a week. Optionally add a reminder time.
  2. Check in. Each habit has a strip with the last seven days. Tap a day to mark it done, and tap again to undo. Forgot yesterday? Tick it now. You can also click any square in the heatmap to fix an older day.
  3. Read your streaks. Daily habits show consecutive days. Weekly habits show consecutive weeks where you hit the target, so a rest day does not wreck a weekly habit.
  4. Study the heatmap. The top calendar combines every habit over the last 26 weeks, and each habit has its own. Darker squares mean more done that day. Gaps show you which weeks went wrong and why.
  5. Set goals. Write a goal, break it into milestones and tick them off. The progress bar shows how far along you are.

Reminders

Press Enable browser notifications if you want alerts. They appear at each habit's time while this tab stays open. Without permission, or on browsers that do not support it, a banner at the top lists habits that are due and not yet done.

Making habits stick

  • Start with two or three habits, not ten.
  • Make the daily version small enough to do on your worst day.
  • Attach a habit to something you already do, like water after you wake up.
  • Never skip twice in a row. One miss is an accident, two is the start of a new habit.

Backup and export

Download a JSON backup regularly and import it on any device. The CSV export lists every check-in for use in a spreadsheet.

Frequently asked questions

Where is my habit data stored?

Only in your browser on this device. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account. Use the JSON backup to move your habits to another device or keep a copy.

How are streaks counted?

A daily habit streak is the number of days in a row ending today, or yesterday if you have not checked in yet today. A weekly habit streak counts consecutive Monday to Sunday weeks in which you reached the target; the week in progress never breaks it.

Do reminders work when the tab is closed?

No. Browser notifications fire only while this page is open in a tab, because nothing runs on a server. If you decline notifications, a Due now banner on the page still shows the habits whose time has passed.

Why does it ask for notification permission only on a button?

Browsers expect permission requests to follow a user action, and asking on page load is intrusive. Press Enable browser notifications only if you want them; the rest of the tool works without it.

Can I check in for a day I missed?

Yes. Use the seven-day strip on each habit to tick or untick the last week, or click a square in the heatmap to toggle any past day. Future days cannot be checked.

What does the CSV export contain?

One row per check-in with the date, habit name, type and weekly target. It opens in any spreadsheet so you can chart your own history.
