How to use the expense and budget tracker

A private budget tracker that takes a minute to set up

This tracker keeps a simple record of money coming in and going out, compares spending with monthly budgets and shows where it goes. Everything is stored in your browser, there is no sign-up, and your numbers never leave your device. The first view shows a fictional household so you can see how it works. Use Reset to sample later, or Clear all to start with your own data.

Getting started

  1. Add entries. In Transactions choose income or expense, a date, an amount, a category and an optional note. Add them as they happen or in one sitting each week.
  2. Set budgets. In Budgets give each spending category a monthly limit. The Overview shows a bar per category, amber near the limit and red once you are over it, and a warning appears at the top of the page.
  3. Add recurring items. Rent, salary, subscriptions and annual fees go under Recurring. Choose weekly, monthly or yearly and a start date, and optionally an end date. They appear in every month they apply to.
  4. Read the charts. The donut shows each category's share of spending. The bars compare income with expenses for the last six months, which is the quickest way to see whether you are saving.

Several currencies

Set your base currency under Currencies and data, then add the other currencies you use with a rate, meaning how many units of the base currency one unit of the other is worth. Choose the currency on each entry. Rates are manual by design, so your history never changes when markets move. Update a rate when you want newer entries converted differently.

Import, export and backup

Export a month or all entries as CSV to open in a spreadsheet. Import a CSV from your bank by giving it a header row with date, amount and, if you have them, type, currency, category and note. Use Backup JSON regularly, because browser storage can be cleared. Restore JSON brings back everything: entries, budgets, rates, categories and recurring items.

Habits that make budgets work

Keep categories few, around eight to twelve. Budget from last month's real numbers, not from hope. Review once a week for five minutes, and move unspent money to a savings category on purpose rather than letting it disappear.

When you need more

A browser tracker suits one person. If you want shared household or team budgets, bank connections or approvals, DEV3 can build a finance app around your process.

Frequently asked questions

Where is my financial data stored?

Only in your browser on this device. Nothing is uploaded and there is no account, so nobody else can see it. Clearing site data removes it, which is why the page offers a JSON backup.

How do recurring entries work?

You enter a bill or income once with a start date and how often it repeats. The tool creates the matching lines for whichever month you view, so you never retype rent or a subscription. A monthly item on the 31st lands on the last day of shorter months.

How are other currencies handled?

Each entry carries its own currency code. You choose a base currency and type the exchange rates yourself. Totals, budgets and charts are shown in the base currency. A currency without a rate counts 1:1 and the page warns you.

Can I import my bank statement?

Yes, if you can save it as CSV. You need columns for date (YYYY-MM-DD) and amount, and optionally type, currency, category and note. Negative amounts without a type are treated as expenses. Rows that cannot be read are skipped and counted.

When do I get a budget warning?

When spending in a category goes over its monthly budget, a red notice appears at the top and the bar turns red. A bar turns amber once 85 percent is used.

What are the limits?

Up to 5,000 entries and 100 recurring items. That is years of normal personal use and keeps the page fast and the backup small.
