How to use the discount and sale price calculator

Know the real price before you buy

Shops advertise percentages, but what you want is the final amount and how much you saved. This calculator covers the offers you are most likely to meet.

Single discount

Enter the original price and the discount percentage. You get the sale price, the amount saved and, if you add a sales tax rate, the price including tax. It is the quickest check for a "30% off" sign.

Stacked discounts

Many promotions combine, for example a seasonal sale plus a coupon. Add each discount as a separate row and the tool applies them one after another. The list shows the price after every step, and the effective discount is always less than the simple sum: 20% and 10% give 28%, not 30%. Use up to six steps.

Buy X get Y free

Enter the price per item, how many you are taking, and the offer: for example buy 2 get 1 free. The tool works out how many items are free, what you pay and your effective discount. An optional extra percentage lets you add a coupon on the paid items.

Reverse calculations

On the Reverse tab, enter the sale price and discount to recover the original price. Or enter the original and sale prices to find the discount percentage a shop has applied. This is useful for spotting inflated "was" prices.

Shopping tips

  • Compare the price per item, not just the headline percentage.
  • A big discount on something you do not need is still money spent.
  • Check the small print on stacking, because many stores exclude sale items from coupons.
  • Prices are rounded to the nearest cent at each stage, like a till would.

Frequently asked questions

How do stacked discounts work?

Each discount applies to the price left after the previous one. 20% off then a further 10% off is 28% in total, not 30%, because the second discount is taken from 80% of the original price.

How is buy 2 get 1 free calculated?

For every 3 items you pay for 2. With 7 items there are 2 complete groups, so 2 are free and you pay for 5. The tool shows the free items and the effective discount.

Is buy 1 get 1 free the same as 50% off?

For an even number of items yes, you pay for half. With an odd number the discount is slightly lower, because the last unpaired item is full price.

How do I find the original price?

Use the Reverse tab. Divide the sale price by (1 - discount). A sale price of 75 after 25% off means the original was 100.

Is sales tax applied before or after the discount?

In most places tax is charged on the discounted price. The single discount mode adds the tax after the discount so you see the final amount at the till.
