Bomber Blast is a complete, free HTML5 game in the classic grid-action bomb-arena genre, built by DEV3 Technologies with Phaser 3 and TypeScript on the client and Node.js, Express and Socket.io for online play. Drop bombs, blast through brick walls, grab power-ups and catch your rivals in the flames: the last bomber standing wins.

Play it now: the browser demo runs the campaign and quick matches against bots. Online multiplayer needs the included game server, which you host yourself.

Free download: sign in to any DEV3 account and the full source code, documentation and deployment files are yours, including future updates.

Game modes

  • Campaign – 10 levels against 1–3 bots of rising difficulty, 3 lives per level; clearing levels unlocks 5 extra bomber colours.
  • Quick Match – 1–3 bots on Easy, Medium or Hard with 1, 3 or 5 lives, and a local high-score table.
  • Online multiplayer – up to 4 players per room: public room list, private rooms by 6-character code or invite link, ready-up, and host controls for bot fill, bot skill, round length, visibility and kicking.

Classic rules, done properly

  • 15 × 13 arena (configurable) with a fixed pillar lattice, randomised brick fill and guaranteed-clear spawn corners.
  • 3-second fuse; flames stop at hard walls, destroy the first brick, and instantly detonate any bomb they reach, so chain reactions resolve in a single tick.
  • Five power-ups: Extra Bomb, Speed Boost, Blast Range, Bomb Pass and Remote Detonation.
  • 3-minute rounds, then Sudden Death: hard blocks fall in a spiral from the edge to the centre. Simultaneous deaths are a draw.

AI bots that don't blow themselves up

  • Pathfinding with A* and breadth-first search over a danger map that stores each tile's time-to-blast, including chain reactions and Sudden Death.
  • A bot drops a bomb only if an escape route still exists afterwards.
  • Three presets change the re-plan interval (0.6 / 0.3 / 0.1 s), reaction delay (0.4 / 0.2 / 0.05 s), aggression, safety margin and mistake rate.

Real-time multiplayer

  • Server-authoritative: clients send only intents (direction and button presses). The server runs the same rules engine, so a modified client can't move faster, walk through walls or place extra bombs.
  • 60 Hz simulation, binary snapshots at 20 Hz (under 1 KB for four players), client-side prediction with reconciliation for your own bomber and 100 ms interpolation for the others.
  • Input validation and rate limiting, zod-validated lobby messages, and automatic clean-up of empty and idle rooms.

Plays everywhere

  • Keyboard (arrows/WASD, Space, E/Shift), touch (virtual joystick with A/B buttons, portrait and landscape) and the Gamepad API (D-pad or stick, A/B), switching automatically to whichever you use last.
  • Every sprite is drawn in code at the screen's own resolution, so it stays sharp from phones to 4K; WebGL with an automatic Canvas fallback.
  • Synthesised sound effects and music through the Web Audio API with stereo panning, plus an HTML5 Audio fallback. No asset files and no third-party requests: the whole client is about 400 KB gzipped.

What's in the package

  • Full TypeScript source as an npm-workspaces monorepo: packages/shared (rules engine, AI, protocol), apps/client (Phaser) and apps/server (Socket.io), about 7,900 lines.
  • 47 Vitest tests (rules, chains, power-ups, Sudden Death, A*, danger map, bot safety, codec, rooms over real sockets) and 8 Playwright browser tests, including a two-browser multiplayer match and gamepad emulation.
  • HTML documentation and installation guide, a Dockerfile (game and server on one origin), Vercel and Netlify configs for the static client, and a GitHub Actions CI workflow.

Requirements

  • Node.js 18 or newer (20 LTS recommended) and npm
  • To host online multiplayer: any server that runs a long-lived Node.js process or a Docker container. Single-player needs only static hosting.
  • No database, API keys or paid services
