How to use the text cleaner

Tidy pasted text in one pass

Text copied from PDFs, emails, web pages and chat apps arrives with double spaces, ragged line breaks, hidden characters and curly quotes. This cleaner fixes them with a few checkboxes and shows the result instantly.

What you can fix

Spaces and lines

  • Trim each line and collapse repeated spaces into one.
  • Collapse three or more line breaks into a single blank line, or remove blank lines entirely.
  • Join everything into a single line, handy for turning a list into a paragraph or a pasted column into a search query.

Lists

  • Remove duplicate lines, optionally ignoring case.
  • Sort lines from A to Z, Z to A, by length or reverse the order. Sorting is natural, so numbers are ordered the way people expect.

Characters

  • Strip HTML tags and decode common entities.
  • Remove emoji, including skin tone and joined sequences, while keeping copyright and trademark signs.
  • Convert smart quotes, long dashes and ellipsis characters to straight quotes, hyphens and three dots, which is useful for code, CSV files and plain-text systems.
  • Remove zero-width and non-breaking spaces that cause invisible mismatches.
  • Remove accents, turning café into cafe, for simple search keys and URLs.

Typical recipes

  1. Clean a mailing list: trim, remove blank lines, dedupe ignoring case, sort A to Z.
  2. Prepare code or CSV text: straight quotes, invisible characters off.
  3. Plain text from a web page: strip HTML, collapse spaces and blank lines.
  4. One-line keyword list: remove blank lines, then join into one line.

Tips

  • Order matters: HTML is stripped first, then invisible characters, emoji, quotes and accents, then line options.
  • Use "Use as input" to chain cleanups, and compare the before and after counts under the boxes.
  • Everything runs in your browser, so private text stays private.

Frequently asked questions

What does "remove duplicate lines" keep?

The first occurrence of each line, in its original position. Turn on "Ignore case" to treat Apple and apple as the same line. Blank lines are never treated as duplicates.

Will stripping HTML remove the text inside tags?

No. It removes tags, script and style blocks, and decodes common entities such as & and  , leaving the visible text. Block tags become line breaks.

What counts as invisible characters?

Zero-width spaces, soft hyphens, byte order marks and non-breaking or exotic spaces. They often arrive when you copy from web pages or chat apps and can break searches and code.

Does it remove all special characters?

No, only the ones you choose. Accents are removed only with the accents option, and emoji only with the emoji option.

Can I sort numbers properly?

Yes. Sorting is natural, so item 2 comes before item 10.

Is my text stored?

No. Cleaning runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
