How to use the markdown editor with live preview

Write Markdown and see it as you type

Markdown is plain text with simple marks that turn into headings, lists, links and code when rendered. This editor shows the rendered result live next to your text, with a toolbar for the syntax you do not remember.

The editor

Type in the left pane; the preview on the right updates immediately. On a phone the two panes become tabs. The toolbar inserts or wraps syntax around your selection: bold, italic, strikethrough, three heading levels, bulleted, numbered and task lists, quote, inline code, code block, link, image, table and divider. If nothing is selected it inserts a placeholder you can overwrite.

Syntax you will use most

  1. Headings: start a line with one to six # characters.
  2. Emphasis: italic, bold and strike.
  3. Lists: start lines with - or 1. and indent to nest.
  4. Links and images: square brackets for the text, then the address in round brackets; start an image with an exclamation mark.
  5. Code: wrap in single backticks, or fence blocks with three backticks and an optional language.
  6. Tables: pipes between columns and a row of dashes under the header.
  7. Task lists: - [ ] to do and - [x] done.

Exporting

Copy the Markdown or HTML to your clipboard, or download a .md file or a standalone .html page. The HTML export wraps your content in a minimal responsive page so it opens nicely on its own.

Safe by default

Rendered output is sanitised so pasted content cannot run scripts in your browser or in a page you publish. That makes it suitable for previewing README files, release notes and documentation from sources you do not fully trust.

Writing tips

  • Use one H1 per document and descend in order.
  • Keep link text meaningful rather than "click here".
  • Add alt text to every image.
  • Preview before publishing, because different sites render some Markdown extensions differently.

Privacy

Your text is stored only in this browser and never leaves it.

Frequently asked questions

Which Markdown flavour is supported?

GitHub-flavoured Markdown: tables, task lists, strikethrough, fenced code blocks and autolinks, in addition to standard headings, emphasis, lists, quotes, links and images.

Is the HTML safe to publish?

The preview and exported HTML are sanitised with DOMPurify. Scripts, event handlers, iframes, forms and inline styles are removed. Review any HTML you paste before using it in a sensitive context.

Does it save my work?

Yes, in your own browser storage, so the text is there when you come back. It is never uploaded. Clear removes it.

Can I use raw HTML in my Markdown?

Safe HTML such as headings, links and images passes through. Anything risky is stripped from the preview and export.

How do I make a table?

Use the table button for a starter, then edit the cells. Columns are separated by pipes and the second row of dashes defines the header.

What does the export contain?

Download .md gives your raw Markdown. Download .html gives a complete page with simple built-in styles and the sanitised body.
