How to use the app icon generator
One image, every app icon you need
Shipping an app means producing dozens of icon files at specific sizes, with the right names, folders and manifests. This tool does that from a single image and hands you one zip.
Steps
- Drop your artwork onto the page. Start from a square 1024 x 1024 image or larger.
- Choose how it fits: Whole image keeps all of it, Fill crops to the square.
- Set padding if the artwork touches the edges, and pick a background colour for transparent areas.
- Tick the platforms you need: iOS, Android and PWA.
- For PWA, add your app name and theme colour.
- Check the previews, then download the zip.
What you get
iOS: an AppIcon.appiconset folder with every iPhone and iPad size, from 40 to 180 pixels, plus the 1024 pixel App Store icon, and a Contents.json that lists them. Drag the folder into your asset catalog in Xcode. A single-size version of Contents.json is also included for Xcode 14 and newer.
Android: mipmap folders for mdpi to xxxhdpi containing the classic square icon, the round icon and an adaptive foreground layer, plus the adaptive icon XML files, the background colour resource and a 512 pixel Google Play icon. Copy the res folder into your project.
PWA: icons from 72 to 512 pixels, two maskable icons whose artwork sits safely inside the mask, a manifest snippet and the head tags to link everything together.
Design tips
- Keep one simple, bold shape. Detail disappears at 40 pixels.
- Avoid text except for a single letter or logo mark.
- Leave breathing room around the artwork. Adaptive and maskable icons can be cropped to a circle.
- Do not round the corners yourself. iOS applies its own mask.
- Test on a real home screen before release.
Frequently asked questions
What source image should I use?
A square image of at least 1024 x 1024 pixels with the important artwork well inside the edges. PNG or SVG is best. Do not add rounded corners or shadows yourself, because iOS and Android add their own shapes.
Why is the iOS icon background filled?
Apple does not allow transparency in app icons, so transparent areas are flattened onto the background colour you choose. Android adaptive and maskable PWA icons also use that colour behind the artwork.
What is an Android adaptive icon?
Since Android 8 the system draws your icon in whatever shape the device theme uses. You supply a foreground layer and a background colour. The foreground artwork is kept inside the central safe zone, so the shape never cuts it off.
How is this different from the favicon generator?
The favicon generator makes browser tab icons and the Apple touch icon. This tool makes the full native app icon sets for Xcode and Android Studio, and installable web app icons including maskable ones.
Is my artwork uploaded?
No. The icons are drawn and zipped inside your browser.
